Insights from our Career Services network global Conference highlighted significant changes occurring across employment markets worldwide, with these trends now emerging in New Zealand.

Recruitment Market Dynamics

Recruitment consultants are experiencing unprecedented application volumes, driven by AI-generated CVs, automated application tools, and candidates applying for more roles than ever before.

As a result, employers are facing a flood of well-presented applications and adapting traditional screening methods to identify the best candidates.

Most candidates can now produce professional, ATS-friendly CVs, meaning a "good enough" CV is often sufficient.

Networking Is Becoming the New Competitive Advantage

With employers receiving hundreds of applications for many roles, referrals and professional relationships are becoming increasingly valuable.

Candidates who build industry connections, maintain visibility, and engage with recruitment consultants before they need a job are able to be highlighted in a crowded market and potentially gain early access to opportunities.

From Employability to Earnability

While experience, qualifications, and technical skills remain important, there is growing emphasis on "earnability"—the ability to generate income through multiple channels.

Contracting, consulting, portfolio careers, freelance work, and side businesses are becoming increasingly common as professionals seek greater flexibility and career resilience.

The Human Skills That Matter Most

As AI automates routine tasks, employers are placing greater value on capabilities such as:

  • Critical thinking

  • Judgment

  • Adaptability

  • Resilience

  • Communication

  • Relationship building

  • Learning agility

These skills are increasingly seen as key indicators of long-term career success.

Looking Ahead

The Conference speakers agreed the recruitment market is shifting from a CV-centric model to one focused on relationships, capability, and adaptability. While AI has changed how candidates present themselves, networking, personal visibility, and strong human skills are becoming the true differentiators.
