Healthware IT company Orion Health has won the supreme award in the 2012 New Zealand International Business Awards - New Zealand International Business of the Year.
When ambitious New Zealand exporter Orion Health was launched in 1993, the company had just three staff.
Ten years later, chief executive and founder Ian McCrae opened Orion Health’s modest first office in the United States.
Today, Orion Health has 600 highly paid and highly skilled staff in 14 offices across nine countries.
McCrae says he drew on two science degrees (including a thesis on Antarctic ice shelves) and some experience in computer programming to launch a software export company that continues to grow at an average rate of 33 percent each year.
Orion has been crowned supreme winner in the 2012 New Zealand International Business Awards. The judges described Orion Health as a “megastar in our information technology industry”.
With just two offices in New Zealand (Auckland and Christchurch) and a product which is digitally “dispatched”, Orion Health represents the country’s new economy of weightless exporters – companies who trade in ideas and innovation, rather than commodities.
“We use up very little land, pay our staff a lot and use few resources. We are basically just exporting ideas.
“New Zealand is a country of innovators. New Zealand has to do what the Nordic countries have done. You have to sell designs, you have to sell ideas. You can’t just sell commodities.”
Orion Health sells to hospitals, health IT vendors and medical equipment manufacturers, government health departments and healthcare organisations or hospital groups.
The company’s two main products are the Rhapsody Integration Engine and the Health Information Exchange (also known as Electronic Health Record). Rhapsody provides the high-performance exchange of information between disparate systems, with marked ease of use for customers configuring solutions. The Health Information Exchange solution draws together a number of Orion Health technologies to provide health data in a patient-centric, single, secure unified view.
McCrae says customers range from single hospitals, to regional organisations. The Electronic Health Records system is in use in the United States, United Kingdom, Scotland, Spain, Canada, Singapore and Australia.
McCrae says he has drawn on the experience of another large New Zealand company, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, for advice on entering some key markets, such as Japan. He encourages emerging business leaders to pick up the phone and request a meeting to pick the brain of a more experienced business leader in their community.
“People are very, very helpful. New Zealanders are generous. They will make time,” he says.
Orion Health’s largest markets are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Newer opportunities are being pursued in Japan, China, the Middle East and Europe.
McCrae’s vision is for Orion Health to become New Zealand’s first billion-dollar software exporter by providing the world’s leading suite of eHealth products.
The 20-year-old company increased its workforce by 50 percent in the past year and revenue has climbed 500 percent in five years. Orion Health’s 2011 operating revenue was up 42 percent on the previous year and of this 94 percent was earned offshore.
Orion Health won the supreme award at the 2012 New Zealand International Business Awards. The judges said: Orion Health is without question a successful international company. It has a clear focus on its niche sector, a willingness to invest in research and development and an aggressive expansion strategy. A megastar in our information technology industry, Orion Health’s energy and drive is a shining example to all New Zealand companies wanting to go global.
